About Tillandsia crocata dwarf
Tillandsia crocata dwarf is a compact form of Tillandsia crocata, one of the most fragrant air plants in cultivation. The flowers are golden yellow, and the scent is sweet and strong.
This dwarf selection stays small, at 2 to 3 inches wide per rosette. The leaves are narrow, curved and silver, and they form a loose channel shape. Because the plant is so compact, it clusters quickly into full clumps.
The species grows from Bolivia and southern Brazil down to Uruguay. It is tough and adaptable, and it blooms readily once established.
We sell it as singles and as clumps. At under a dollar a plant, it is the cheapest fragrant air plant we offer, so it works well in scented gift sets.
A blooming clump can carry a dozen or more flowers at once. That is when the scent is strongest, and it is when customers buy. Time your displays to the bloom, which usually follows a cool spell.
Growing Tillandsia crocata dwarf: Care Guide
Crocata wants sun and quick drying. Treat it as xeric.
- Light: Bright light with direct sun for part of the day. Light brings on the yellow flowers.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Clumps hold water in the centre, so dry them thoroughly.
- Airflow: Moving air after each soak.
- Temperature: 40°F to 95°F. It handles cool nights well.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding increases flower count.
- Mounting: Glue singles to small pieces of wood. Clumps look best wired and hung.
- Pups: Constant. Clumps double in size in a good year.
