About Tillandsia ixioides Dwarf Fragrant

Tillandsia ixioides is one of the few species in the genus with genuinely yellow flowers, and this dwarf selection packs that trait into a plant barely 2 inches tall.

The fragrance is the other half of the appeal. Ixioides blooms carry a soft sweet scent, unusual on a plant this small, and the dwarf form flowers readily at a young age.

Foliage is stiff, narrow and heavily silvered, held in a tight symmetrical rosette. The trichome coat is dense enough that the plant reads almost white in strong light.

Small grades measure around 2 inches tall by 1.5 inches wide. It comes from the dry country of northern Argentina and Bolivia, and it is exceptionally tough for its size.

Growing Tillandsia ixioides Dwarf Fragrant: Care Guide

A small high-altitude plant from dry scrub. Therefore it wants light and cool nights more than water.

  • Light: High light with direct morning sun. Good light is what brings on the flowering you are stocking it for.
  • Water: Soak 15 minutes every 10 days. Keep soaks short at this size.
  • Drying: Shake it out well. The tight rosette holds water at its core.
  • Airflow: Steady airflow after each soak.
  • Temperature: Cold tolerant, from 40°F to 90°F. Cool nights encourage bloom.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength for stronger flowering.
  • Mounting: No soil. Glue or wire to cork in groups, since a mass shows better than a single.
  • Pups: Offsets follow bloom and cluster readily. Leave them attached.
