About Tillandsia fuchsii var. fuchsii
Tillandsia fuchsii var. fuchsii is the type form of Tillandsia fuchsii, from Mexico. Most fuchsii in the trade is the smaller var. gracilis. This form has thicker leaves and grows much larger.
The shape is the classic fuchsii sea urchin: a small bulbous base with dozens of fine silver leaves radiating in every direction. On this variety the leaves are stouter, so the urchin looks fuller.
Minis start at 1 inch. Specimens reach 4 inches or more, which is big for a fuchsii. The bloom is a slender pink spike with violet flowers.
We grade it in five sizes from mini to specimen. Minis suit terrarium kits, and specimens are display plants.
Buyers who know fuchsii will see the difference at once. Buyers who do not will simply see a better urchin. Either way it outsells the common form on a bench.
Growing Tillandsia fuchsii var. fuchsii: Care Guide
Fine leaves dry fast, but the bulbous base traps water. Drying is the whole game. This form tolerates a little more moisture than var. gracilis because the leaves are thicker, but the base is just as vulnerable. Treat every soak as a drying job first and a watering second.
- Light: Bright light with some direct sun.
- Water: Soak 15 minutes every 10 to 14 days. Mist in between if the leaf tips dry.
- Drying: Invert and shake hard. Water in the base will rot it.
- Airflow: Strong airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: Glue the base to wood or set it in a small holder. Never bury the base.
- Pups: One to three pups after bloom.
