About Tillandsia graomogolensis
Tillandsia graomogolensis is a Brazilian Tillandsia named for Grão Mogol in Minas Gerais. It has two selling points that rarely appear together: fragrant flowers and a heavy silver trichome coat.
The flowers are bright purple, and the scent is strong. It clumps readily, and it often pups before it blooms, so a mature clump carries several spikes at once.
The trichomes are large, like those on tectorum. Grown outdoors in a dry climate they become exaggerated, and the plant turns almost white.
We grade it from 2-inch smalls to larges 7 inches or more. Larges are usually multi-headed.
For a fragrant-plant display it is the natural partner to the silver species. It gives you scent from a plant that already looks like a tectorum.
Growing Tillandsia graomogolensis: Care Guide
It comes from dry Brazilian highland. So grow it bright and airy, and water it sparingly. Because the trichome coat is so heavy, the plant can look dry when it is not. Judge by weight and leaf firmness rather than colour, and err on the side of less water in humid weather.
- Light: Very bright light with direct sun. Sun builds the trichomes.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days. Less in humid weather.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Dry in moving air.
- Airflow: Strong airflow. This is a rot risk in still humid air.
- Temperature: 40°F to 95°F. It handles cool nights.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding increases flower count.
- Mounting: Wire it to wood and hang it where the scent can carry.
- Pups: Before and after bloom. Clumps double quickly.
