About TillyBoost fertilizer
TillyBoost fertilizer is our own Tillandsia and bromeliad feed, and we developed the blend with a fertilizer company specifically for air plants. The analysis is 16-9-25. It is the fertilizer we use on every plant in our own greenhouses.
Two things set it apart. First, its nitrogen comes in a free form that plants take up directly, so it works on a plant that never touches soil. Many general fertilizers rely on a form of nitrogen that soil bacteria must break down first, and an air plant has no soil. Second, we removed copper, boron and zinc, because those minerals harm Tillandsias. It also contains no coloured dyes.
We sell it two ways. The 4 ounce pack is ready for resale, and it comes with a 1 teaspoon scoop. Thirty of those packs fit in a medium flat rate box. Alternatively, the 25 pound bulk bag suits a grower, or a shop that repacks into its own containers.
Order ten or more 4 ounce packs and the price halves to $3.50 each. Bulk lots of 23, 35 or 60 packs bring it down to $3.25 to $3.00 a pack. The 25 pound bag ships separately by USPS large flat rate box, and its price includes that shipping. Shipping for the 4 ounce packs is extra, so a large pack order may carry a second shipping bill.
For a shop, TillyBoost is the add-on with the best margin on the counter. Every customer who buys a plant needs to feed it, and a 4 ounce pack lasts a hobbyist for a year or more.
Using TillyBoost fertilizer with air plants
Dissolve the powder in water and apply it during a normal soak or mist. The dose depends on how often you feed. For example, use half a teaspoon per gallon if you feed at every watering. Use one teaspoon per gallon for weekly or fortnightly feeding. If you feed once a month, use 1.5 to 2 teaspoons per gallon. Feed lightly and often rather than heavily and rarely, because air plants absorb through their leaves and burn easily. Then let the plant dry as usual. Tank types such as brachycaulos take the feed in their cup water instead.
- Fits: Every Tillandsia and bromeliad, mounted, potted or tank.
- Dose: 1/2 tsp per gallon every watering; 1 tsp weekly or fortnightly; 1.5 to 2 tsp monthly.
- Method: Add to the soak water or the mister, then dry the plant normally.
- Feeding: Monthly feeding with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer is the simplest routine to teach a customer.
- Storage: Keep the pack dry and sealed, because the powder absorbs moisture.
- Care of the plant: Never feed a dry plant. Wet it first, then feed.
