About Tillandsia wire

Tillandsia wire is a soft aluminium craft wire, 3 mm thick, which is 14 gauge. It bends by hand, it holds its shape, and it never rusts. Those three things make it the right wire for plants that get wet every week.

Each roll is 33 feet long, and we sell the rolls singly. Choose from thirteen colours: red, royal blue, green, black, purple, lavender, aqua blue, silver, copper, gold, magenta, mocha and mojito.

The colour range matters more than it sounds. Silver and copper disappear against a silver plant, while a bright colour becomes part of the design. For example, a magenta spiral under a green stricta reads as a deliberate piece rather than a plant on a wire.

Because the wire is soft aluminium, it does not cut into a plant the way steel does. It also weighs almost nothing, so a roll adds nothing to shipping.

For a shop, wire is the cheapest way to turn a bare plant into a hanging or standing product. One roll makes thirty or forty hangers. In addition, the thirteen colours let you match a season or a store palette without buying new displays.

Using Tillandsia wire with air plants

Cut a length of about 12 inches. Wrap one end twice around the base of the plant, snug but not tight, and then twist it closed at the back. Form the rest into a hook to hang the plant, or coil it into a spiral to stand the plant on a table. Alternatively, reverse the wrap and push the straight end into soil or a pot, so the plant floats above a planter. Because the plant lifts off in seconds, you can soak it normally. Never wrap the wire around the leaves, since a tight wire cuts the leaf as the plant grows.

  • Fits: Any plant with a firm base, for example xerographica, harrisii, caput-medusae, stricta and ionantha clumps.
  • Method: Two wraps around the base, twist closed, then shape a hook or stand.
  • Watering: Lift the plant off to soak, or mist it on the wire.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the soak.
  • Pairing: Use E-6000 Tillandsia Glue for a permanent mount, wire for one you will move.
  • Care of the plant: Loosen the wrap every year or so as the base thickens.
