About Tillandsia usneoides thick

Tillandsia usneoides Thick Straight Form is a selected form of Tillandsia usneoides, the Spanish moss of the American South. The strands are thicker and straighter than the typical curly form.

Spanish moss has no roots. It hangs in long silver curtains from whatever holds it, and each strand is a chain of tiny plants. This form makes heavier, more orderly curtains.

The flowers are tiny and green, and they are fragrant at night. Most people never notice them; the silver strands are the display.

We sell it in 10-inch clumps and 36-inch clumps. The long clumps are ready to drape over a branch or a wire frame.

For florists and display builders, thick straight usneoides is the better working material. It holds its line, it is easier to arrange, and it lasts longer between waterings than the fine curly form.

Growing Tillandsia usneoides thick: Care Guide

Spanish moss wants humidity and airflow at the same time. Hang it where air moves, mist it often, and let it dry between mistings. It dislikes stagnant air more than it dislikes drought.

  • Light: Bright indirect light. Filtered sun is ideal.
  • Water: Mist heavily two or three times a week, or dunk weekly.
  • Drying: Hang loosely so every strand dries within a few hours.
  • Airflow: Constant airflow. Dense wet clumps rot from the inside.
  • Temperature: 35°F to 95°F. It tolerates brief light frost.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the mist water.
  • Mounting: Drape it over wire, branches or hooks. Never pile it in a bowl.
  • Pups: Strands lengthen and branch. Divide clumps by pulling them apart.
