About Tillandsia andreana
Tillandsia andreana is a Colombian species with soft, needle-fine leaves in a perfect sphere. The colour is lime green, and the whole plant looks like a small pine ball.
The flower is out of scale with the plant. A single large tubular bloom, bright red to orange-red, opens from the centre of the rosette and lasts for days.
Smalls are 2 inches, and larges are 3 to 4 inches. It pups after bloom and forms small clumps, which we also sell.
It is one of our most popular species. The symmetry sells it before the flower does, and the flower closes the sale.
Andreana suits kits, shells and small holders. Because the leaves are soft and green, it also does well in humid displays where silver plants struggle.
Growing Tillandsia andreana: Care Guide
Andreana comes from humid Colombian forest, so it likes more water and gentler light than a silver plant. Weekly soaks and misting keep the sphere full. The fine leaves dry fast, so rot is rare as long as air moves. Do not let the sphere flatten by leaving it on one side; set it upright to dry, or hang it, so the leaves keep radiating evenly.
- Light: Bright indirect light. Avoid hot direct sun.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 7 days. Mist between soaks.
- Drying: Shake and set upright. It dries within an hour or two.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding brings on the red flower.
- Mounting: Glue the base to a shell or cork. Small plants suit our Air Plant Displays.
- Pups: Two to four pups after bloom.
