Tillandsia tectorum Wide Leaf Form is the fuzziest plant most buyers will ever handle. Long white trichomes cover every surface, and the plant reads as pure snow rather than silver. The wide leaf form carries broader blades than the type, so the effect is fuller and rounder.
Tillandsia tectorum comes from the western Andes of Peru and Ecuador. It is the only Tillandsia native to Ecuador. It grows on bare rock and cliff face, not on trees.
Most people assume all that fuzz exists to soak up water. In fact the opposite is true. The trichomes create surface area for rapid evaporation, which stops the plant drowning in constant Andean fog and shields it from fierce high-altitude light.
That single fact explains its entire care regime. Understand it and this plant is easy. Ignore it and you will rot one.
Growing Tillandsia tectorum Wide Leaf Form: Care Guide
This is the most drought-adapted plant we stock. Therefore water is the thing to get right, and less is safer than more.
- Light: Very high light. It grows fully exposed on rock in habitat, so full morning sun suits it.
- Water: Mist heavily rather than soaking. If you do soak, keep it brief, no more than 10 minutes, and only every 2 to 3 weeks.
- Drying: Critical. The trichome layer holds water like felt. Shake hard and dry fast, ideally within two hours.
- Airflow: The strongest airflow of anything in your collection. A fan is not excessive.
- Temperature: Cool nights suit it. Comfortable from 45°F to 90°F, and it handles cold better than most.
- Feeding: Feed lightly, monthly at most, with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Do not overfeed.
- Mounting: No soil. Mount on rock, cork or driftwood. Never sit it in a closed vessel.
- Handling: Handle it dry. Wet trichomes flatten and take time to fluff back up.
