About Tillandsia brachycaulos x concolor

Tillandsia brachycaulos x concolor is a hybrid of two tough Mexican and Central American species. Brachycaulos gives it the red blush. Concolor gives it stiff leaves and a bigger frame.

The result is a robust green rosette that grows fairly large. Small plants start at 3 inches, and extra-large plants pass 10 inches across. The leaves are firmer than pure brachycaulos, so it ships and handles well.

At bloom the whole plant flushes bright red. The flowers are purple and tubular, and the red stage lasts for weeks. It is one of the most reliable red blushers we grow.

We stock four sizes from small to XL. Because it is hardy and inexpensive, it is a good volume plant for shops and event work.

Because it grows large without becoming heavy, it also works well as a wedding and event plant. A single XL in full blush fills a centrepiece, and it can be sold on afterward.

Growing Tillandsia brachycaulos x concolor: Care Guide

This is a mesic hybrid. It likes regular water, but it must be dried like any other air plant.

  • Light: Bright indirect light. A little morning sun brings a stronger blush.
  • Water: Soak 20 minutes every 7 days. Mist between soaks in dry air.
  • Drying: Invert and shake. Never leave water standing in the centre.
  • Airflow: Moving air after every soak.
  • Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. Protect from frost.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
  • Mounting: Glue to wood or set in a holder. Large plants sit well in a bowl from our Air Plant Displays.
  • Pups: Two to four pups after bloom. Separate at one third the mother’s size.
