Tillandsia tectorum Caulescent Form differs from the familiar rosette selections in one structural way. Rather than staying as a flat disc, it builds a lengthening stem and carries its fuzzy leaves spiralling along it.
That changes what you can do with it. A caulescent plant can be draped, hung or wound along a branch, and mature specimens develop a trailing silhouette that a rosette form never will.
The trichome cover is the same trademark tectorum snow. Long white hairs cover every surface, and their job is to speed evaporation rather than absorb water, protecting the plant in the constant fog of the western Andes.
Plants come in three sizes from 5 inches up. Larger grades show the stem habit best, since the trailing form only develops with age.
Growing Tillandsia tectorum Caulescent Form: Care Guide
Understand the fuzz and this plant is easy. Therefore keep it dry, bright and moving in the air.
- Light: Very high light. It grows exposed on Andean rock, so full morning sun suits it well.
- Water: Mist heavily rather than soaking. If you soak, keep it under 10 minutes and only every 2 to 3 weeks.
- Drying: Critical. Shake it hard and dry fast, within two hours. Water held in the trichome layer is what kills these.
- Airflow: The strongest airflow in your collection. A fan is reasonable.
- Temperature: Cool nights suit it. Comfortable from 45°F to 90°F.
- Feeding: Feed lightly, monthly at most, with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Do not overfeed.
- Mounting: No soil, never a closed vessel. Hang or drape it so the stem can extend and trail freely.
- Pups: Offsets form along the stem rather than only at the base, so it builds into a chain over time.
