About Tillandsia novakii
Tillandsia novakii is a large Mexican species, and it holds maroon-red colour all year long. Most red air plants only blush at bloom. Novakii stays red, so it earns its bench space every day.
The leaves are stiff and broad, and they arch outward from a strong central rosette. Mature plants reach 20 to 26 inches across. The bloom is a branched red spike with purple flowers.
Our seedlings start grey-green. As they mature under strong light they take on the adult maroon colour. Buyers who want colour now should choose the medium and larger grades.
We grade novakii from small seedlings to 26-inch extra-large plants. It is uncommon in the trade at this size, and it is a strong statement piece in a display. It belongs to the genus Tillandsia.
Because the leaves are stiff and thick, novakii ships well even at large sizes. It also tolerates neglect better than most big green species, so it suits busy retail settings where watering can slip.
Growing Tillandsia novakii: Care Guide
Novakii is a sun lover. The more light it gets, the deeper the maroon.
- Light: Very bright light with direct sun for part of the day.
- Water: Soak 20 to 30 minutes every 10 to 14 days. Large plants need a full dunk.
- Drying: Invert and shake. The broad leaf bases hold water where they overlap.
- Airflow: Strong airflow. A fan is worthwhile for big plants indoors.
- Temperature: 40°F to 95°F. It shrugs off cool nights.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding supports the large leaf mass.
- Mounting: Heavy plants need a solid mount. Wire to driftwood or set in a heavy bowl.
- Pups: Pups after bloom. Separate at one third the mother’s size.
