About Tillandsia Kurt Horstii

Tillandsia Kurt Horstii is a Tillandsia hybrid of two small Brazilian species: mallemontii and graomogolensis. It draws on both parents rather than favoring one. The result is a compact, clumping plant with vibrant purple flowers. The fragrance is genuinely pleasant, a trait it shares with mallemontii.

It’s an easygoing grower that builds into full clumps. It also readily sets seed pods alongside its offsets, so a mature clump often carries both new plantlets and developing seed at once.

It ships in four sizes: Small (3 inches), Medium (7 inches), Large (9 inches), and Clump (8 inches and up). The Clump grade already carries offsets and seed pods, ready to divide or display as a group. That range lets a shop stock an entry point and a collector-grade clump from the same cross.

Both parent species are diminutive, fragrant bloomers. So Kurt Horstii appeals to buyers who value scent and small-scale charm over dramatic size.

Its willingness to clump and self-propagate makes it a practical volume plant, since one starting clump restocks itself over a season or two.

Growing Tillandsia Kurt Horstii: Care Guide

Run it xeric, matching both parent species. Soak 10-14 days, then invert and shake dry so the small rosette doesn’t trap water at its base.

  • Water: Soak 10-14 days, then invert and shake dry.
  • Light: High light with strong airflow.
  • Feeding: Diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer monthly supports flowering and clumping.
  • Fragrance: Bloom scent is strongest with bright light and good airflow.
  • Grading: Small through Large singles, or a multi-offset Clump.

Feed it TillyBoost Fertilizer regularly, and see more compact, fragrant species in our Rare Air Plants category, or check the air plant care guide for the basics.
