About Tillandsia jonesii
Tillandsia jonesii is a small Brazilian species that was only described as its own species in 2008. It is easy to grow and still rare in cultivation, which is an unusual combination.
In habitat it grows on rocky hillsides, and it clumps so freely that it blankets whole slopes. It does the same on a bench. Singles are 2 to 3 inches, and clumps form within a season or two.
The leaves are narrow and grey-green, and the rosettes are small and neat. The bloom is a short spike with violet flowers.
We offer singles and clumps of three or more plants. It is a good filler plant for terrarium kits and mixed displays.
Because it mounds rather than trails, jonesii also works on flat surfaces. A clump on a slab of cork or stone looks like a piece of the hillside it came from. It is a Tillandsia for buyers who like a story.
Growing Tillandsia jonesii: Care Guide
Rocky Brazilian slopes mean sun and quick drainage. Treat it as xeric. It clumps so readily that the main task is deciding when to divide. For resale, do not: a mounded clump on cork sells for more than the same plants sold as singles, and it takes no extra work.
- Light: Bright light with direct sun for part of the day.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Dense clumps need a thorough shake.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 40°F to 95°F. Cool nights are fine.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: Glue singles to stone or cork and let them mound.
- Pups: Constant. This is one of the fastest clumpers we grow.
