About Tillandsia ionantha vanhyningii type 2
Tillandsia ionantha vanhyningii is the odd one out among ionanthas. Where every other form builds a tight flat rosette, vanhyningii grows upward on a distinct stem, stacking its leaves along it like a small silver column.
This is our type 2 clone, selected for a heavier silver coat and a slightly stouter stem than the typical form. It holds its shape well rather than flopping as it lengthens.
The ionantha blush comes through unchanged. As bloom approaches the upper leaves flood red and violet, and on a stemmed plant that colour sits higher and shows more clearly than it would on a flat rosette.
Sizes run from 1 inch upward. Because it climbs rather than spreads, it works well mounted vertically where the stem habit reads properly.
Growing Tillandsia ionantha vanhyningii type 2: Care Guide
Ionantha forms are among the easiest plants in the Tillandsia genus. Therefore this one asks very little beyond light.
- Light: High light, including direct morning sun. Light is what produces the blush.
- Water: Soak 15 to 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Water collects where the leaf bases wrap the stem.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 50°F to 100°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength for stronger colour.
- Mounting: No soil. Mount it upright or on its side so the stem can extend.
- Pups: Offsets form along the stem, so it builds into a branching cluster rather than a flat clump.
