About Tillandsia duratii giant
Tillandsia duratii thick leaf giant clone is our selected form of Tillandsia duratii, chosen for size. It is the largest duratii clone we have ever seen. Our biggest specimens are over 6 feet long.
Duratii is the famous curling species from the dry Chaco of Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. The leaves hook backward and grip whatever they touch. On this clone they are thicker and longer, so the plant is heavier and more sculptural.
The flowers are the other reason to grow it. They are lavender, and the scent is strong and sweet. We think it smells like grape Kool-Aid, and customers agree.
We grade it from 3-inch seedlings through offsets, larges and XL plants to 2-foot Mega Giants on wire, clumps of XL plants, and one-of-a-kind specimens sold as pictured. Specimens need extra shipping.
This is a plant to enjoy for decades. A seedling bought today becomes a specimen in time, and every stage is saleable along the way.
Growing Tillandsia duratii giant: Care Guide
Duratii grows in hot, dry thorn scrub with strong sun and wind. So it is thoroughly xeric. It tolerates drought, cold nights and neglect, and it resents only one thing: staying wet.
- Light: Full sun to very bright light.
- Water: Soak 20 to 30 minutes every 10 to 14 days. Dunk large plants.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Curled leaves trap water where they cross.
- Airflow: Strong airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 35°F to 100°F. It handles brief light frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding supports the size.
- Mounting: Wire to a solid mount, or hang it and let the leaves grip.
- Pups: Offsets follow bloom. Separate at one third the mother’s size.
