About Tillandsia ‘Crowning Glory’
Tillandsia Crowning Glory is a hybrid of Tillandsia xerographica and Tillandsia exserta. It takes the best from both parents. From xerographica it inherits broad, silver, ribbon-like leaves. From exserta it gets a tighter, more upright frame.
The result is a sculptural rosette that still fits a retail shelf. Because of that, it sells well as a single statement plant. You do not need to group it to make an impact.
Both parents grow in dry highland habitat. You can see this in the plant’s color. That silver-grey cast is dense trichome cover, and the plant uses it to pull moisture straight from the air.
Expect 8″–10″ across at the size we ship. Leaves arch outward, and they curl more as the plant matures. In addition, the branched flower spike carries magenta bracts that hold color for weeks. Hybrid vigor is real here, so these often outgrow both parents.
Growing Tillandsia ‘Crowning Glory’: Care Guide
Crowning Glory is a xeric hybrid. Therefore it wants more light and less water than a green, mesic Tillandsia. Here is what it needs.
- Light: Give it bright indirect light all day. Direct morning sun helps. In dim light the rosette loosens and the silver dulls.
- Water: Soak it for 20–30 minutes every 10 to 14 days. Then invert the plant and shake it out. Misting alone is not enough.
- Drying: The wide leaf bases cup water, just as xerographica does. Standing moisture at the crown kills this plant. It should feel dry within four hours.
- Airflow: Moving air matters more than humidity. If the plant dries slowly, add airflow rather than watering less often.
- Temperature: Keep it between 70°F and 100°F. Protect it from frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly through spring and summer with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength. Add it to the soak water. Steady feeding drives the pink flush in the bracts.
- Mounting: Never use soil. Cork and driftwood suit the arching form. Also, wire it rather than glue it, because the plant is heavy at this size.
- Pups: Offsets follow the bloom. Separate them at about one third the size of the mother.
