About blooming capitata domingensis
This is the blooming capitata domingensis listing: the small Dominican capitata from our Tillandsia capitata v. domingensis base listing, shipped while it is in spike. Stock lands here only when a crop flowers.
Domingensis is burgundy all year in bright light, so the bloom does not need to change the leaf colour. What it adds is the spike: a short, tight head of rosy bracts rising from the centre, with violet flowers opening from it.
The plant is compact, 3 to 4 inches on a typical medium, and the burgundy leaves frame the spike closely.
We grade blooming plants from 1-to-2-inch smalls and 3-inch mediums through larges and extra-larges to 7-inch XXL and 8-inch specimens. Specimens are old, full plants.
The head of bracts holds colour for weeks. Because the leaves stay burgundy after the flowers finish, this is one bloom listing that keeps selling after the bloom, and the mother pups from the base.
Growing blooming capitata domingensis: Care Guide
Keep it bright: this form needs strong light to hold its burgundy, and shade greens it within weeks whether it is in flower or not. Give it direct sun with care, because full afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. While in spike, mist rather than soak so water does not sit in the head of bracts; after the flowers, return to a soak every ten days or so and shake it well, because the tight rosette holds water at the centre. Feed lightly; too much fertilizer also fades the burgundy.
- Light: Very bright light with some direct sun. Shade greens it.
- Water: Mist while in spike. Soak 20 minutes every 10 days after.
- Drying: Invert and shake. The tight centre holds water.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength; never stronger.
- Mounting: Glue or wire to wood. It suits small holders.
- Pups: Two or three from the base after bloom.
