About Tillandsia capitata domingensis
Tillandsia capitata v. domingensis is the Dominican Republic form of Tillandsia capitata. It is smaller than the Mexican forms, and its leaves run dark burgundy-red all year rather than only at bloom.
The leaves are narrow, upright and slightly thick. Plants are 3 to 4 inches, so it fits where the big capitatas cannot.
Colour is the reason to stock it. Grown in high, bright light out of harsh direct sun, it holds a purple-red tone through the seasons. Few compact air plants do that.
The bloom adds a short red-bracted spike with violet flowers. Against the dark foliage the spike is subtle, and the foliage stays the main event.
We offer it from small to XXL and as specimens. It is a good year-round colour plant for shops that cannot rely on bloom timing.
Growing Tillandsia capitata domingensis: Care Guide
This form grows on dry Caribbean hillsides. It wants bright light for colour but scorches in hot direct sun, so bright shade or morning sun is ideal. Keep it on the dry side and it holds its burgundy. A plant that turns green is telling you it has too much shade or too much fertiliser, and the fix is more light and less feed.
- Light: High, bright light out of direct afternoon sun.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. The upright leaves drain quickly.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength. Overfeeding greens it.
- Mounting: Glue or wire to wood. It suits small holders from our Air Plant Displays.
- Pups: Two or three pups after bloom. Pups keep the colour.
