About blooming brachycaulos x concolor

This is the blooming brachycaulos x concolor listing: the hardy hybrid from our Tillandsia brachycaulos x concolor base listing, shipped in and around its flowering window. It is stocked when a crop is coming into colour.

At bloom the stiff, broad frame of this hybrid flushes bright red from the centre outward, and a short spike of green-and-red bracts opens violet flowers. The concolor parent gives the stiff leaves; brachycaulos gives the red.

Plants ship at the stage the crop is in. At the time of writing they are not yet blushing or blooming, so check the listing note; colour develops over a few weeks as the season turns.

We grade it from 3-inch smalls and 4-to-5-inch mediums to 6-to-8-inch larges and 10-inch extra-larges. Larges and above are big, full plants.

This is the red plant for events and volume retail. The flush lasts for weeks, the plant is very hardy, and it grows fairly large, so an extra-large in colour is a centrepiece at a modest price.

Growing blooming brachycaulos x concolor: Care Guide

Bright light with some direct sun brings the red and holds it; a plant in shade blooms green. Water weekly as normal until the flowers open, then mist for the fortnight they last, keeping the centre dry. This hybrid follows the non-tank rule: invert and shake after every soak, because water left in the broad rosette rots the base. It tolerates the rough handling of an event display well. After bloom, feed monthly and expect two to four pups from the base.

  • Light: Bright light with direct sun for part of the day. Sun brings the red.
  • Water: Soak 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days; mist only while the flowers are open.
  • Drying: Invert and shake. Broad leaves hold water at the base.
  • Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
  • Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. No frost.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding supports the size.
  • Mounting: Wire large plants to a solid mount.
  • Pups: Two to four from the base after bloom.
