About Tillandsia aizoides
Tillandsia aizoides is a true miniature, and singles stand barely an inch tall. It belongs to subgenus Diaphoranthema, the group of dwarf Tillandsias that most collectors discover late and then chase hard.
It is native to Bolivia, where it grows at altitude in dry, exposed conditions. Small size and high altitude together make it far tougher than it looks.
Leaves are short, stiff and slightly succulent, packed tightly along a creeping stem. Rather than forming one neat rosette, it builds outward into low cushions. A mature clump looks more like a moss or a sedum than an air plant.
Flowers are small and yellow, and they appear readily even on young plants. For a retail display, aizoides works best massed on a single mount where the cushion habit can show.
Growing Tillandsia aizoides: Care Guide
Small plants dry out faster than large ones. Therefore aizoides needs slightly more frequent water than its xeric habitat suggests.
- Light: Bright light, including direct morning sun. Good light keeps the growth tight and compact.
- Water: Soak 10 to 15 minutes every 7 to 10 days. Keep soaks short, because the plant is small and absorbs quickly.
- Drying: Shake clumps out thoroughly. Water trapped between the tiny leaves is the main risk.
- Airflow: Steady airflow. Dense cushions need it more than single plants do.
- Temperature: Genuinely cold tolerant. It is happy from 40°F to 90°F, which makes it useful in cooler retail spaces.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength. Feeding speeds up clumping noticeably.
- Mounting: No soil. Glue or wire it flat to cork or a small piece of wood so the cushion can spread.
- Pups: It offsets constantly. Leave the pups attached; the clump is the point.
