About the sputnik sea urchin
The sputnik sea urchin is a sea urchin test with a flat base, and that base is the point. Most urchin shells roll on a table, but the sputnik sits flat, so it works as a standing display without a hanger.
Raised bumps cover the surface where the spines once sat. That texture gives it the satellite look behind the name. Colours run pale with darker bands.
We sell it in three sizes. Extra small is about 1.5 to 2 inches, small is 2 to 2.5 inches, and medium is about 3 inches wide. Sizes are approximate, because these are natural shells.
In addition, we take 25 cents off each urchin when you order ten or more of one size. The cart applies the discount automatically.
For a shop, the sputnik is the urchin for shelves and counters. Set a plant in each and line them up, with no hooks or line required. It also hangs like our other urchins if you prefer.
Using the sputnik sea urchin with air plants
Set the plant through the opening in the base so the shell sits over it and the leaves spread out above. Then stand the urchin on its flat side. Friction holds most plants. However, a dab of E-6000 Tillandsia Glue keeps a small plant in place if the urchin will hang. To hang it, run fishing line or Tillandsia Wire through the top hole. Lift the plant out to soak it, and let it dry before it goes back. Alternatively, mist in place, because the shell drains through the base. Keep it in bright indirect light.
- Fits: One plant per shell, for example ionantha, small bulbosa, small caput-medusae or scaposa.
- Mounting: Friction fit, then glue if it will hang.
- Watering: Lift out to soak, or mist in place.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the soak.
- Placement: Shelf or counter in bright indirect light.
- Care of the shell: Fragile, so pack it with care.
