About small sea urchin shells

Small sea urchin shells are sea urchin tests about 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide, and we sell them in packs of twelve. They are the size that fits a small ionantha, which makes them the most-used urchin in the trade.

We offer three colours. Green urchins come in 12-packs and 15-packs. Pink urchins are a subtle pink and white. Purple or white urchins are a mix of pale violet and white. Because they are natural, the shade varies within each pack.

A 12-pack starts at $6, which is 50 cents a shell. That is the volume price for a display that most customers already know.

The packs are light and ship with your plants, so they add nothing to the shipping cost.

For a shop, a dozen urchins with a small plant in each is a ready-made hanging display. Hang them at different heights in a window, or set them in a bowl at the register. Also, the three colours let you match a season or a store palette.

Using small sea urchin shells with air plants

Set a small plant through the base opening so the leaves fan out like spines. Friction holds most plants, but add a dab of E-6000 Tillandsia Glue if the urchin will hang, because a small plant can slip out. Then run fishing line through the top hole and hang it. Mist in place, since the shell drains through the base. Lift the plant out every couple of weeks for a full soak, and let it dry before it goes back. Hang the urchins in bright indirect light, and turn them occasionally so the plants grow straight.

  • Fits: One small plant per shell, for example small ionantha, scaposa, mini brachycaulos or a small bulbosa.
  • Mounting: Friction fit, then glue for hanging.
  • Watering: Mist in place, or lift out to soak.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the soak.
  • Placement: Hang in bright indirect light.
  • Care of the shells: Fragile, so store the pack in its box.
