About the Murex endivia shell
The Murex endivia shell is the endive murex, now classified as Hexaplex cichoreum. It takes its name from the ruffled, leaf-like frills that run down the shell in rows. Those frills give it a texture no other shell in our range has.
The shell is a warm brown with darker frills, and the aperture is round and open. It sits comfortably on its side on a table, and it also hangs well.
We sell it singly at 75 cents. Because it is a natural shell, the depth of the frills and the exact colour vary from piece to piece.
Shells ship with your plants, so a few of them add nothing to the cost of a normal order.
For a shop, the endive murex is the textured option. Put a smooth silver plant in it, and the contrast between frilled shell and soft leaves sells the piece. It looks far more expensive than it is.
Using the Murex endivia shell with air plants
Set a small or medium plant into the aperture with the base inside the lip. On a table, the shell rests on its frills and stays put. However, add a dab of E-6000 Tillandsia Glue if the shell will hang. To hang it, drill a small hole and use fishing line, glue a magnet to the back, or set it in a Seashell Tillandsia Hanger. Mist the plant in place, because the aperture drains. Then lift it out every couple of weeks for a full soak and let it dry before it goes back.
- Fits: Small and medium plants, for example ionantha, bulbosa, caput-medusae or a small stricta.
- Mounting: Set in the aperture, then glue if it will hang.
- Watering: Mist in place, or lift out to soak.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the soak.
- Placement: Table or hanger in bright indirect light.
- Care of the shell: The frills chip if dropped, so handle with care.
