About Tillandsia latifolia vivipara type 2
Tillandsia latifolia vivipara type 2 is our clumping grade, and the difference from type 1 is how it ships rather than what it is. Type 1 goes out as clean single rosettes. Type 2 goes out as established plants with pups already attached and growing.
That matters commercially. A clump has immediate shelf presence, and the attached pups mean a retail customer is buying several plants in one piece rather than a single rosette they have to wait on.
Singles run 4 to 5 inches wide. The clumped grade is roughly 3 inches wide by 4 inches tall with offsets, so it reads taller and fuller than the flat type 1 rosette.
Everything else is the species you already know: stiff silver leaves, heavy trichome cover, and the viviparous habit of raising plantlets directly on the flower spike.
Growing Tillandsia latifolia vivipara type 2: Care Guide
Clumps hold water where plants meet. Therefore the drying step matters more here than on the single-rosette grade.
- Light: Very high light. Strong light keeps clumps compact rather than stretched and leggy.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 12 to 14 days, or mist more often instead.
- Drying: Invert and shake hard. Water sitting between clustered plants is the single most common way a clump is lost.
- Airflow: Strong airflow, and more of it than a single plant needs.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 45°F to 95°F. Cool damp nights suit it.
- Feeding: Feed monthly through spring and summer with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: No soil. Mount the whole clump upright on wood or rock and leave it intact.
- Dividing: Only split if you want singles. Left alone the clump keeps widening, and it sells better that way.
