About the hanging wire basket
The 10-inch hanging wire basket is an empty, open-wire basket that works with many clumping Tillandsias. It ships without a liner, because the plants themselves fill it.
Tillandsia clumps tend to fall apart over time as the mother plants die out from the middle. Set in a basket, the clump is held together as it grows, and eventually all you can see are the plants. The clumping species swallow the wire.
It can work with other plants as well if you add a liner, but for air plants it is used bare.
The basket is $3.50, with a 50-cent discount on orders of ten or more. It is light and ships flat-stacked.
For a grower or a shop this is the way to sell a clump as a finished hanging piece. A funckiana, aeranthos or ionantha clump in a basket becomes a hanging ball within a season or two. The basket is invisible by then.
Using the hanging wire basket with air plants
Set the clump in the basket so its base rests on the wire and the plants face outward on every side, then fix it with a few turns of Tillandsia Wire through the base. Choose species that clump fast and hang naturally: funckiana, aeranthos, ionantha, stricta, bergeri types and Houston. Hang the basket where air moves on all sides. Water it by dunking the whole thing, then hanging it to drain. The open wire drains instantly, which is why it works where a solid pot fails. As the clump fills, it grows through and over the wire, and the ball can be left for years.
- Fits: Clumping species: funckiana, aeranthos, ionantha, stricta, Houston, Sputnik-type balls.
- Mounting: Wire the clump base to the basket. No liner.
- Watering: Dunk the whole basket weekly and hang to drain.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the dunk.
- Placement: Hang in bright light with airflow on all sides.
- Care of the basket: None. The plants hide it within a season or two.
