About the ironwood display
Our ironwood display pieces are lengths of incredibly dense, heavy natural wood. Iron wood is so dense that it may not float, and its natural beauty makes it really easy to mount Tillandsias to.
Smalls run 4 to 6 inches. Mediums run 7 to 10 inches with a cut bottom, so they stand nicely on a flat surface. Larges are bigger pieces as available, and every piece differs in shape and grain.
A piece can rest on a tabletop, or you can hang it with a rope. Because the wood is so heavy, a tabletop piece stays put even with a large plant on it.
Checkout may not include the full shipping cost for this wood, because the checkout figure is an estimate. It ships by UPS Ground, and if there is an additional cost we email an invoice before shipping.
For a shop the medium with a cut bottom is the easy sale: a standing piece of dark, polished-looking wood with a silver plant on top. As a result, it is ready for a counter or a desk, with no stand or hanger to buy.
Using the ironwood display with air plants
Fix plants to the wood with Tillandsia Wire wrapped around the base and twisted at the back. Alternatively, glue a small plant with E-6000 Tillandsia Glue for a permanent piece. Dense ironwood holds no water, so a plant on it dries as fast as it would on wire. Therefore you can mist the piece in place, and then unwire plants for a full soak every couple of weeks. Stand a cut-bottom medium on a table, or hang a small piece by rope or wire from a hook. Finally, keep the wood out of standing water, and it will outlast every plant mounted on it.
- Fits: One to three plants, for example harrisii, xerographica, caput-medusae or ionantha clumps.
- Mounting: Wire for plants you will move, but glue for permanent pieces.
- Watering: Mist in place, then unwire for a full soak every two weeks.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the soak.
- Placement: Tabletop for cut-bottom mediums, or hang it by rope.
- Care of the wood: None beyond keeping it dry, because it is very hard.
