About virgin cork scraps

Virgin cork scraps are the small pieces left over when we cut virgin cork bark into tiles and tubes. We sell them by the quart-size bag at $3, and each bag holds a random mix of shapes and sizes. No two bags are the same.

Because the pieces are small, they suit jobs that a full tile cannot. For example, they fit inside a glass orb, they build a themed motif in a terrarium, and they make a mini mount for a single small plant.

Several bird rescues buy these bags as chew toys, since cork is natural and safe for birds to gnaw. That tells you something about how clean the material is.

Larger quantities of cork ship by UPS Ground to save you money, so they may arrive after your plants. If extra shipping applies, we send an invoice to the email on your account.

For a shop, a bag of scraps is the cheapest way to add cork to a display. Tuck a piece into an orb with a plant, or glue three pieces together as a mini mount. One bag makes a dozen small pieces.

Using virgin cork scraps with air plants

Pick a piece with a flat side or a natural pocket, and then set a small plant on it. Fix the base with E-6000 Tillandsia Glue, or wire it on with Tillandsia Wire if you want to lift it off later. Cork dries fast and resists rot, so you can mist the whole mount in place. For a full soak, dunk the piece, plant and all, and let it drip dry. Inside a glass orb, keep the cork piece small so air still moves around the plant. Then set the orb or mount in bright indirect light.

  • Fits: One small plant per piece, for example ionantha, scaposa, funckiana or a small stricta.
  • Mounting: Glue or wire the plant to a flat face.
  • Watering: Mist in place, or dunk the whole mount.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the soak.
  • Placement: Orbs, terrariums and mini mounts in bright indirect light.
  • Care of the cork: None, because it resists rot and insects.
