This is the blooming pruinosa x scaposa select red listing: plants from our Tillandsia pruinosa x scaposa select red base listing, shipped while they are in flower. It is stocked for the flowering window only.
This hybrid is red most of the year anyway, which is why we selected it. In bloom it goes further: the frosted, twisting leaves deepen to a saturated red and a short spike opens violet tubular flowers from the centre.
The contrast of violet on red is the picture. It is a small plant with a big colour hit.
We grade blooming plants as mediums at 4 inches and larges at 6 inches. Both sizes are mature and carrying a spike.
The blush lasts for weeks around the flowers, and because this clone keeps its red in most light, the plant stays attractive on a shelf long after the flowers finish. Pups follow from the base.
Growing blooming pruinosa x scaposa: Care Guide
This hybrid is on the mesic side, so it likes a weekly soak, but while it is in flower mist instead and keep water out of the centre where the spike sits. Bright indirect light with a little morning sun holds the red without scorching the soft scaposa-type leaves. Both parents have a bulbous or swollen base, so always drain it upside down after a soak. When the flowers fade, go back to weekly soaks, keep it bright, and the pups come from the base within a few months.
- Light: Bright indirect light with morning sun.
- Water: Mist while in flower. Soak 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days after.
- Drying: Invert and shake hard. Drain the base.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 45°F to 90°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength; skip while in flower.
- Mounting: Glue the base to cork or a shell. Never bury it.
- Pups: One to three from the base after bloom.
