About Tillandsia plumosa
Tillandsia plumosa is a small Mexican species with a coat of feathery trichomes. The name means “plumed,” and it fits. Each leaf carries fine hairs, so the whole plant looks soft and silver.
It grows as a rounded urchin shape, much like tectorum. However, plumosa stays smaller and the leaves are finer. A mature rosette reaches about 3 inches tall and 5 to 6 inches wide.
The trichomes do real work. Because they hold moisture for a long time, the plant tolerates infrequent watering. It also pups freely and builds into a dense clump.
We grade plumosa in six sizes, from 1-inch seedlings to 6-inch XL rosettes. Therefore you can stock singles for terrarium work or clumps for display pieces.
Plumosa is uncommon in the wholesale trade, and most sellers only have a few. We grow it in volume, so you can offer a consistent supply. It also holds well in a shop, because it needs so little water.
Growing Tillandsia plumosa: Care Guide
Plumosa comes from cool highland forest. So it wants light, air and moderate temperatures rather than heat.
- Light: Bright indirect light. Avoid hot direct sun, which can scorch the fine leaves.
- Water: Soak briefly every 10 to 14 days. Misting between soaks also works well.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Then let it dry fully within a few hours.
- Airflow: Strong airflow is essential. Stagnant humid air causes rot.
- Temperature: Prefers 50°F to 85°F. It dislikes extended heat.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: The base is small, so a dab of glue on driftwood or cork holds it well.
- Pups: Offsets appear around the base. Leave them attached for a fuller clump.
