About Tillandsia nana

Tillandsia nana is a miniature from the high Andes of southern Peru and Bolivia. It grows along a stem, and over the years it builds into a trailing clump.

The leaves are many, thin and flexible, arranged spirally along the stem. Singles run from 2 inches to over 6 inches long. Older plants branch.

Flowers are small and pink to purplish, and they appear at the stem tips. They are modest, but a clump carries many at once.

Nana is easy and forgiving. It is the sort of plant you hang up and grow on for years, and it repays that with a fuller clump every season.

For shops it is a good low-priced hanging item. It ships well, it needs little water, and it sells to customers who want something unusual but undemanding.

Growing Tillandsia nana: Care Guide

High elevation means cool nights, strong sun and thin air. So it likes light and airflow and dislikes heat. Nana can take a light frost that would damage a lowland species, so it also suits growers in cooler regions who keep plants outside for most of the year. Bring it in only for hard freezes.

  • Light: Bright light with some direct sun.
  • Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
  • Drying: Hang it to drain. Stems hold water between leaves.
  • Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
  • Temperature: 35°F to 90°F. It handles cold better than heat.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
  • Mounting: Wire the base and hang it. It will trail on its own.
  • Pups: Along the stem. Leave them on.
