About Tillandsia latifolia vivipara type 3
Tillandsia latifolia vivipara type 3 is our third form of the viviparous Tillandsia latifolia. It is close to type 2, but the leaves are thinner and the trichome coat is heavier, so it reads more silver.
Like the other vivipara forms, it pups in two places. Several pups form at the base, and one forms on the bloom spike. Year after year the spike pup blooms, pups again, and the chain lengthens.
Singles run 4 to 6 inches. We also sell small clumps without a spike and large clumps with pups already on the spike.
The bloom is a pink spike with lilac flowers. It is the spike pup, not the flower, that makes this plant worth watching.
Type 3 is the form for buyers who want the silvery look. Type 2 is greener and broader; type 1 is the single-rosette form. Stocking two of the three gives a clear contrast.
Growing Tillandsia latifolia vivipara type 3: Care Guide
Latifolia grows on Peruvian coastal dunes and dry hills, where fog supplies most of the water. So it wants sun and air, and it must dry fast. Clumps trap water in the centre, and that is where rot starts.
- Light: Very bright light with direct sun.
- Water: Soak 15 minutes every 10 to 14 days. Misting between soaks suits it.
- Drying: Invert and shake hard, then hang clumps to drain.
- Airflow: Strong airflow. Coastal wind is its natural state.
- Temperature: 40°F to 95°F. Cool nights are welcome.
- Feeding: Feed lightly every 4 to 6 weeks with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer.
- Mounting: Wire the base and hang it so the chain can trail.
- Pups: At the base and on the spike. Leave spike pups on for the chain.
