About Tillandsia Houston Giant Form
Tillandsia Houston Giant Form is a very large form of Tillandsia ‘Houston’, the hybrid of Tillandsia stricta and Tillandsia recurvifolia. The regular Houston is a compact plant; this form grows more leaves on a thick, dense stalk, and it reaches a size the ordinary form never does.
Soft, silver-green, recurving leaves make a full rosette. The bloom is the Houston signature: a large, rounded head of pink bracts with white flowers, one of the showiest blooms among the easy hybrids.
We sell singles as mediums from 4 inches, larges from 5 inches and extra-larges from 7 inches, plus clumps: medium clumps with three or more pups, large clumps about 7 to 8 inches wide and extra-large clumps around 10 inches.
Stock is limited, and the plants in the photos may not match every size in the menu, because inventory moves.
For buyers who know Houston as a small pink-flowered plant, the giant form is the upgrade. It has the same bloom at twice the scale, and a clump in flower is a centrepiece.
Growing Tillandsia Houston Giant Form: Care Guide
Houston is an easy hybrid, and the giant form is no harder, only bigger. It likes bright, indirect light with some morning sun, a soak every week or so, and a full dry-out between. The dense stalk and full rosette hold more water than the regular form, so shake it hard and let it dry upside down; a clump needs shaking from several angles. It tolerates cool weather well, and cool nights in autumn help set the bloom. Feed it through spring and summer, because a plant this size builds its head of flowers on what it stored the season before.
- Light: Bright indirect light with some morning sun.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake hard. The dense stalk holds water.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 40°F to 95°F. Cool nights encourage bloom.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding supports the size.
- Mounting: Wire large plants to a solid mount. Clumps display well hanging.
- Pups: Two to four pups after bloom.
