About Tillandsia hirta
Tillandsia hirta is a small, densely hairy species, and the name says as much. Hirta means hairy in Latin, and the plant earns it with a thick coat of trichomes across short, stiff leaves.
Plants stay compact, starting from around 2 inches wide. Rather than growing large, hirta multiplies. It offsets freely and builds outward into tight clusters over time.
Ours are seed grown here in San Diego, and that matters more than it sounds. Seed-grown stock arrives already acclimatised to Southern California conditions, with none of the setback that follows an imported plant. No collection pressure either.
The silver coat is the visual draw. Massed together in a bowl or on a shared mount, a group of hirta reads as a single silver cushion.
Growing Tillandsia hirta: Care Guide
Small plants dry quickly. Therefore hirta needs watering a little more often than its heavy trichome coat suggests.
- Light: Bright light, with direct morning sun welcome. Strong light keeps the form tight and the silver bright.
- Water: Soak 15 to 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days. Keep soaks short for small plants.
- Drying: Shake clumps out well. Moisture trapped between clustered plants is the main cause of loss.
- Airflow: Steady airflow. Clumps need more than single plants do.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 45°F to 95°F. Locally grown stock handles our climate without fuss.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength. Feeding speeds up clumping noticeably.
- Mounting: No soil. Glue or wire small plants to cork so the cluster can spread outward.
- Pups: It offsets constantly. Leave pups attached, because the clump is what customers buy.
