Tillandsia harrisii x achyrostachys is a small plant with an unusually soft surface. Harrisii is the Guatemalan parent, known for a dense coat of fine white trichomes that gives the leaves a velvet finish rather than a chalky one.
Achyrostachys is the Mexican parent, and it contributes a tighter, more upright habit along with stiffer leaf substance.
Together they make a compact silver rosette that holds its shape well. The texture is the distinguishing feature, and it is the thing customers notice when they pick it up.
Plants ship at 3 inches and up, so this works best massed or grouped rather than sold as a single feature piece.
Growing Tillandsia harrisii x achyrostachys: Care Guide
Fine dense trichomes hold surface water. Therefore drying speed matters more than watering frequency here.
- Light: High light, including direct morning sun. Strong light keeps the velvet bright and the rosette tight.
- Water: Soak 15 to 20 minutes every 10 days. Small plants absorb quickly, so long soaks are unnecessary.
- Drying: Shake it out well. The velvet coat holds water on the leaf surface, so aim to be dry within three hours.
- Airflow: Strong airflow after each watering.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 50°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: No soil. Glue or wire small plants to cork, and handle them dry to protect the nap.
- Pups: Offsets follow bloom and cluster readily. Leave them attached for a fuller display.
