Tillandsia seleriana x velutina combines a bulbous silver parent with a velvety one, and the texture is what makes it. Seleriana brings the swollen chalky base. Velutina brings a fine, dense trichome coat that feels like suede rather than felt.
Velutina is Mexican, and its name refers directly to that velvet surface. It also brings colour, because velutina flushes red through the upper leaves as it approaches bloom.
The hybrid keeps both traits. You get a compact bulbous plant with a soft matte finish, and a warm red blush at flowering rather than the plain grey of most seleriana crosses.
Plants ship at 6 to 8 inches and up. The texture is worth pointing out to retail customers, because it is unusual enough to prompt a second look.
Growing Tillandsia seleriana x velutina: Care Guide
A bulbous base plus a dense velvet coat means water sits in two places. Therefore drying matters twice over.
- Light: High light. The red blush is a light response, so shade costs you the colour you bought it for.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days. Both parents are drought adapted.
- Drying: Invert and shake firmly. The hollow base fills during a soak, and the velvet coat holds surface water on top of that.
- Airflow: Strong airflow. Aim to be dry within three hours.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 55°F to 100°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength. Consistent feeding deepens the blush.
- Mounting: No soil. Wire it at an angle so the bulb drains, and handle it dry to protect the velvet.
- Pups: Offsets follow bloom. Separate at one third size, or leave them to form a cluster.
