About Tillandsia geminiflora
Tillandsia geminiflora is a Brazilian species with an unusually soft appearance. The leaves are broad, thin and finely downy, forming a loose rosette that looks closer to a small bromeliad than to a typical air plant.
That resemblance is not accidental. Geminiflora is a tank type, holding water in the well formed where its leaf bases overlap, and it should be watered accordingly.
The flower is the reason to stock it. Rose-pink bracts carry violet-purple blooms, and the combination against grey-green foliage is gentler and more refined than the hard reds elsewhere in the genus.
It grows in the humid coastal forests of southern Brazil rather than on exposed rock. As a result it tolerates lower light than most of our stock, which suits interior retail spaces.
Growing Tillandsia geminiflora: Care Guide
Forest origins and a water-holding cup point the same way. Therefore keep it shaded, humid and topped up.
- Light: Bright indirect light only. The thin downy leaves scorch quickly in direct sun.
- Water: Keep the central well filled and let the plant draw from it.
- Flushing: Empty and refill the cup weekly so it does not turn stagnant.
- Do not invert: Never shake it out. The reservoir is how this plant drinks.
- Airflow: Gentle airflow. It wants more humidity and less wind than a silver species.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 55°F to 90°F. It dislikes extreme heat.
- Feeding: Add diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength to the cup water monthly.
- Mounting: No soil. Mount level so the well stays full, and handle it dry to protect the down.
- Pups: Offsets come readily after bloom and cluster well. Leave them attached for a fuller plant.
