Tillandsia disticha arranges its leaves in two opposite ranks rather than spiralling them around the plant. That habit gives the species a flattened, fan-like profile that is unusual in the genus and instantly recognisable.
This is the giant grey selection, and both halves of that name matter. It grows substantially larger than the rock-dwelling petrea variety, and it carries a heavier silver coat that reads pale rather than green.
A swollen base anchors the plant, with leaves narrowing to fine points as they extend. On a larger plant the two-ranked arrangement is far more obvious than it is on a small one.
Three grades run from 4 inches to 8 inches and up. The species comes from Ecuador and northern Peru, growing on trees rather than rock in its typical form.

A swollen base and a heavy silver coat. Therefore drain it properly and give it strong light.
- Light: High light, including direct morning sun. Strong light keeps the grey coat pale and dense.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. The swollen base traps water and rots if left standing.
- Airflow: Strong airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: Comfortable from 55°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly through the growing season with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: No soil. Mount so the flattened profile faces the viewer, which is how the plant looks best.
- Pups: Offsets form at the base after bloom. Separate at one third size, or leave them to cluster.
