About Tillandsia capillaris Type 8
Tillandsia capillaris is among the smallest plants in the Tillandsia genus, standing about an inch tall. It belongs to subgenus Diaphoranthema, the dwarf group that most collectors find late and then pursue seriously.
The species has an enormous natural range, running down the Andes from Peru through Bolivia and Chile into Argentina. Across that spread it varies so much in leaf form and habit that growers number the distinct clones rather than trying to name them all.
This is our Type 8. Leaves are short, fine and grey, arranged along a creeping stem so the plant spreads sideways into low mats rather than growing upward.
We supply it with multiple pups already attached. That matters at this size, because a single plant is barely visible on a shelf while a clustered mat has real presence.
Growing Tillandsia capillaris Type 8: Care Guide
Tiny plants lose water fast, but Andean origins make this one genuinely tough. Therefore water little and often rather than heavily.
- Light: Bright light with direct morning sun. Good light keeps the mat dense instead of stretched.
- Water: Soak 10 minutes weekly, or mist several times a week instead. Never leave it in a long soak.
- Drying: Shake mats out thoroughly. Water held between packed plants is the one real danger here.
- Airflow: Steady airflow, and more of it as the mat thickens.
- Temperature: Exceptionally cold hardy, from 35°F to 90°F. Useful in unheated retail spaces.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with heavily diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Plants this small need very little.
- Mounting: No soil. Glue it flat to cork or stone and let it creep outward.
- Pups: It offsets constantly. Never separate them, because the mat is the product.
