Description

This hybrid is one we started six years ago, crossing bulbosa Belize with scaposa. We haven’t seen it bloom yet, but we’re genuinely looking forward to it, and we only have a handful of plants available.

About bulbosa scaposa hybrid

Both parent species are already familiar names in our catalog. Bulbosa Belize is a giant form of the classic bulbosa terrarium plant, prized for reaching up to 18 inches as a centerpiece. Scaposa is a mesic species with its own distinct rosette form. Crossing the two aims for a plant that combines bulbosa’s bulbous base with scaposa’s growth habit.

Because this cross hasn’t flowered for us yet, we can’t describe its bloom firsthand. What we can say is that the vegetative growth already shows real promise, and limited early availability like this is often the only chance to get in on a new hybrid before it becomes more widely known. We’ll update this listing with real bloom details the first time one of these plants flowers for us, rather than guessing ahead of time.

Growing bulbosa scaposa hybrid: Care Guide

Since both parents are mesic species, treat this hybrid the same way: soak for 5 to 10 days, then invert fully so water drains out of the bulbous base. Good drainage matters here just as much as it does for straight bulbosa, since a trapped bulb is the most common way to lose one of these plants.

Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Mount it where its bulb can drain freely; see our Air Plant Displays for suitable options. For general watering guidance, visit our Air Plant Care page. Learn more about the genus at Tillandsia on Wikipedia.
