About the pink murex shell
The pink murex shell is the pink-mouthed murex, Hexaplex erythrostomus. The outside is a chalky white with rows of blunt spines. The aperture, however, glows a soft rose pink, and that blush is what gives the shell its name.
It is a sturdy, medium-sized shell with a wide opening, so it takes a small or medium plant easily. The spines hold it steady on a table.
We sell it singly at $1.50. Each shell is natural, so the strength of the pink and the length of the spines vary a little.
Shells ship with your plants. Heavy shells in quantity may add to shipping, and in that case we bill the difference separately.
For a shop, the pink murex is the warm coastal piece. Set a green plant in the rosy aperture and the colours play off each other. It sells well in spring, and it pairs with our black murex for a two-tone display.
Using the pink murex shell with air plants
Set the plant into the aperture so the base rests inside the pink lip. The spines keep the shell from rolling, so it sits on a table without help. However, add a dab of E-6000 Tillandsia Glue if the shell will hang. To hang it, drill a small hole near the spire and use fishing line, or set the shell in a Seashell Tillandsia Hanger. Mist the plant in place, because the aperture drains. Then lift it out every couple of weeks for a full soak, and let it dry before it goes back. Keep the shell in bright indirect light.
- Fits: Small and medium plants, for example ionantha, bulbosa, caput-medusae or a small stricta.
- Mounting: Set in the aperture, then glue if it will hang.
- Watering: Mist in place, or lift out to soak.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the soak.
- Placement: Table or hanger in bright indirect light.
- Care of the shell: Rinse if dusty. Spines can chip, so pack it well.
