About the Murex ramosus shell
The Murex ramosus shell is the ramose murex, Chicoreus ramosus, one of the largest of the spiny murex shells. Ours run from 6-inch mediums through 7-inch larges to 8-inch extra-larges.
These large shells make a statement. The whorls are ridged and branched, and the mouth is wide and often flushed pink inside. The whole shell has the weight and presence of a piece of sculpture.
They are great centrepieces with medium or large plants, where a small shell only takes a mini. A xerographica, a large harrisii or a caput-medusae sits in the mouth with room to spare.
Shells are natural, so each one differs in colour, branching and exact size. Sold singly from $3.50.
For a shop this is the shell that anchors a beach-themed display. One ramosus with a large plant in it sells as a finished centrepiece. The price of the shell is small next to the plant.
Using the Murex ramosus shell with air plants
Set the plant in the mouth of the shell with its base resting inside, and turn the shell so the mouth faces up or forward. A medium plant sits in place by its own weight. A large plant can be steadied with a dab of E-6000 Tillandsia Glue on the inside lip. Lift the plant out to soak, because the deep whorl holds water and a plant left sitting in it rots. Let both dry before reassembling. The shell is heavy enough to stand on a table without tipping. The branched spines mean it needs no stand.
- Fits: Medium and large plants: xerographica, harrisii, caput-medusae, streptophylla, brachycaulos.
- Mounting: Rest in the mouth; glue the base for a permanent piece.
- Watering: Remove the plant to soak. Drain the shell.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer during the soak.
- Placement: Table centrepiece in bright indirect light.
- Care of the shell: Rinse and dry occasionally. Spines are sharp.
