About the Conus shell stand
The Conus shell stand is a cone shell that we have cut so it stands upright on a table. Standing on its cut base, the cone becomes a small pedestal, and a plant on top looks like it is growing from a spire.
We offer three species at about 3.5 inches tall. Conus leopardus is cream with rows of dark spots. The lettered cone, Conus litteratus, carries rows of black and orange marks. Finally, Conus marmoreus is dark with white triangles. In addition, we have Conus leopardus specimens over 5 inches while supplies last.
Because the shells are natural and hand cut, the height and the pattern vary a little from piece to piece.
The stand needs one extra step from you. To hold a plant, glue a short piece of aluminium wire into the shell with E-6000 glue, and both are available here. Alternatively, push a skinny plant straight into the top.
For a shop, the Conus stand is the tabletop piece with a footprint of two inches. Ten of them along a counter, each with a different plant, make a display that takes no shelf space at all.
Using the Conus shell stand with air plants
First, decide how the plant will sit. For a skinny plant, push the base straight into the opening at the top. Funckiana forms, paleacea forms, ‘Moonlight’ and balbisiana all work this way. With a wider plant, glue a length of Tillandsia Wire into the shell with E-6000 Tillandsia Glue and let it cure. Then wrap the wire around the plant’s base. The plant lifts off the wire for watering. Soak it, shake it, let it dry and set it back. The shell itself stays dry, so it lasts indefinitely. Keep the stand in bright indirect light.
- Fits: One plant, for example funckiana, paleacea, ‘Moonlight’, balbisiana or any small plant on a wire.
- Mounting: Push in a skinny plant, or glue in a wire for the rest.
- Watering: Lift the plant off to soak, then return it dry.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer in the soak.
- Placement: Counter or desk in bright indirect light.
- Care of the shell: Wipe dust. Keep it dry.
