About sandblasted grapevine
Sandblasted grapevine is old grape vine that has been cleaned by sandblasting, which strips the loose bark and leaves the twisted, ridged wood underneath. It is ideal for mounting Tillandsias, and it is one of the classic air plant mounts.
Pieces are 12 inches and up, and each one is different. Grapevine twists and forks as it grows, so every piece offers several natural places to set a plant.
The sandblasted surface is clean, dry and slightly rough. That gives wire and glue something to grip and gives roots something to hold.

For a shop, grapevine is the mount customers recognise. A forked piece with two or three plants wired into the crooks is a finished display. The wood can be reused for years as plants are sold off it.
Using sandblasted grapevine with air plants
Set plants in the forks and hollows of the vine. They look as if they grew there. Fix them with Tillandsia Wire wrapped around the base and twisted behind the wood. Wire lets each plant come off for soaking. Glue is fine for a small plant you do not intend to move. Soak the plants separately, or mist the whole piece and let it drip dry. Grapevine dries fast and does not hold water against the plant. Hang the vine from a hook or lay it on a table, and keep it out of a saucer of water. Grapevine is light for its size, so a big piece can hang from a single point.
- Fits: Two to five plants on a 12-inch piece; harrisii, caput-medusae, streptophylla, ionantha clumps.
- Mounting: Wire into the forks. Glue only small permanent plants.
- Watering: Unwire and soak, or mist the whole piece and drip dry.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer during the soak.
- Placement: Hang or lay in bright indirect light with airflow.
- Care of the wood: Keep dry between waterings. Lasts for years.
