Tillandsia tricolor var. melanocreter is a variety of Tillandsia tricolor, a species that ranges from Mexico through Central America. It is a stiff, hardy plant with narrow green leaves in an upright rosette.
The sheaths at the base are blackish, and that is what the variety name refers to. It is completely normal for this plant and not a sign of rot, though it is mistaken for rot often.
The bloom is a tall, flattened spike with red bracts and violet flowers, and it lasts for weeks. It is one of the showier blooms among the inexpensive species.

Tricolor grows in humid forest and along streams, so it likes frequent watering to stay hydrated and more water than a silver plant. It also tolerates high, bright light, which is an unusual combination and a useful one. Soak it weekly, invert it and shake, and give it bright light with some sun. The black sheaths at the base can alarm a new grower, so tell staff before the first watering that they are normal. Clumps hold water between the plants and need a longer drying time than singles.
- Light: Bright light with direct sun for part of the day.
- Water: Soak 20 to 30 minutes every 7 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Give clumps extra drying time.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. It responds well.
- Mounting: Wire the base to wood. Clumps display well hanging.
- Pups: Two to four pups after bloom.
