About Tillandsia somnians
Tillandsia somnians is a viviparous Tillandsia species from Ecuador. It sends up a long bloom spike, and then it grows pups along that spike. One plant becomes a chain of plants.
The leaves hold a burgundy colour all year. They are soft and broad, and they form an open rosette. Small plants start at 5 inches wide, and extra-large plants pass 12 inches.
It is flexible in cultivation. Grow it as a normal air plant, or pot it in a fast-draining mix. Potted plants grow larger and bloom sooner.
Spotting on older leaves is normal for this species. It is not disease, and it does not affect the plant.
Somnians suits growers who want to sell chains and specimens. A mature plant with pups on the spike is a ready-made hanging display, and we offer specimens at that stage.
Growing Tillandsia somnians: Care Guide
It comes from humid Ecuadorian forest, so it takes more water than a silver plant. Dry it fully all the same. Somnians is one of the few species that does as well in a pot as on a mount, which makes it useful for nurseries that sell potted plants. Use bark or a cactus mix and never let it sit wet.
- Light: Bright indirect light. Some morning sun deepens the burgundy.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days, or water a potted plant weekly.
- Drying: Invert and shake unpotted plants. Let potted plants drain completely.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each watering.
- Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. No frost.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding supports the long spike.
- Mounting: Wire it or pot it. Hang it so the spike can trail with its pups.
- Pups: Along the spike and at the base. Leave spike pups on for a chain.
