About Tillandsia lorentziana
Tillandsia lorentziana is a South American species from Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina. The leaves are velvety grey, and they feel soft to the touch because of a dense trichome coat.
The rosette is slim and upright, and it forms a tight fan of leaves. Then it clusters. Older plants become tidy clumps of several rosettes, all sharing the same silver finish.
The bloom is the surprise. A pink to red spike rises above the leaves and opens white flowers. The contrast of silver leaf, pink bract and white petal is unusual and photographs beautifully.
We stock singles from 4-inch smalls to 10-inch larges, plus small clumps with offsets. It is a dependable, low-maintenance species for shops.
It is also one of the easier South American species to keep in a shop. The velvet coat slows water loss, and the plant looks tidy for months between waterings. Small clumps are the best value for resale.
Growing Tillandsia lorentziana: Care Guide
Lorentziana grows on rocks and trees in dry scrub. So it wants light and quick drying.
- Light: Bright light with some direct sun. The silver coat protects it.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
- Drying: Invert and shake. The tight fan can trap water at the base.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 40°F to 95°F. It tolerates cool nights.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer at quarter strength.
- Mounting: Glue or wire to cork, wood or stone. Clumps sit well in an open holder.
- Pups: Pups from the base. Leave them on for a natural clump.
