About Tillandsia hondurensis

Tillandsia hondurensis is the only Tillandsia species found nowhere but Honduras. It is hardy, easy and quick to grow, and it carries a purple blush all year when the light is strong.

The rosette is compact and silver-grey, with firm leaves that arch outward. Singles start at 4 inches wide and fill out from there.

The blush is what sells it. Most species colour only at bloom, but hondurensis holds a violet cast on every leaf as long as it gets sun. The bloom adds pink bracts and purple flowers on top.

We grade it in three sizes. It is a strong plant for retailers who want colour without a bloom cycle.

Because the species is endemic to one country, it also carries a story. Shops that label plants with origin find that customers ask for it by name.

Growing Tillandsia hondurensis: Care Guide

It grows on dry, sunny slopes. Therefore give it light first and water second. Hondurensis is quick for a silver plant, so smalls become mediums in a season. Buy small if you have the light to grow them on, and buy large if you need colour on the bench next week.

  • Light: Bright light with direct sun. The purple fades in shade.
  • Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days.
  • Drying: Invert and shake. Dry within a few hours.
  • Airflow: Good airflow after soaking.
  • Temperature: 45°F to 95°F. Protect from frost.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Light feeding keeps the colour.
  • Mounting: Glue or wire to wood. It also sits well loose in a bowl.
  • Pups: Pups readily after bloom and builds a coloured clump.
