Tillandsia gilliesii is a rare miniature species that we grow from seed here at Davis Farms. It’s native to Bolivia, where it’s often found growing directly on cactus in the dry Bolivian desert.
About Tillandsia gilliesii
This is a true miniature in the Diaphoranthema subgenus, the same group that includes gilliesii minor Peru, angulosa, and several other tiny species we carry. What sets gilliesii apart is its habitat. Growing among cactus in an arid desert makes it exceptionally tolerant of intense light and long dry spells.
We grow our stock from seed rather than importing wild-collected plants, so availability is genuinely limited. Each batch takes years to reach sellable size. We recommend stocking up while supplies last. Its cactus-companion origin also makes it an easy conversation piece for retail customers curious about how air plants actually grow in the wild.
Growing Tillandsia gilliesii: Care Guide
Give gilliesii the same treatment its desert habitat demands: bright light, strong airflow, and a quick dry-out after every watering. Soak briefly or mist, then make sure it’s fully dry within a few hours. Standing water is the biggest risk to a plant this small.
