About Tillandsia floribunda
Tillandsia floribunda is a species from the dry Pacific slopes of Peru and Ecuador. The name means many-flowered, and the bloom lives up to it.
The spike branches into several arms, each with pink bracts and violet flowers, and it lasts for weeks. For the price it is one of the most rewarding blooms we sell.
The leaves are soft and lime green, especially on young plants. Smalls ship green and soft; larger plants firm up and take on a grey cast.
We grade it from 4-inch smalls to 10-inch extra-larges, plus 10-inch clumps with three or more pups.
Floribunda is very easy, and it tolerates drier conditions than its soft leaves suggest. It is a good choice for shops that want a big bloom from a plant that forgives neglect.
Growing Tillandsia floribunda: Care Guide
Dry western slopes mean sun and long dry spells, so floribunda takes bright light and infrequent soaks. Young green plants want a little more shade and water than mature grey ones. It tolerates neglect better than most mesic-looking species, which makes it a good choice for a shop that cannot water on a strict schedule. Give it a cool, dry winter rest and it will spike in spring, and the branched inflorescence lasts for weeks.
- Light: Bright light with direct sun for part of the day.
- Water: Soak 20 minutes every 10 to 14 days. Weekly for young plants.
- Drying: Invert and shake. Soft leaves hold water at the base.
- Airflow: Good airflow after each soak.
- Temperature: 40°F to 95°F. Cool nights are fine.
- Feeding: Feed monthly with diluted TillyBoost Fertilizer. Feeding improves the spike.
- Mounting: Glue or wire to wood. Clumps display well in a bowl.
- Pups: Two to four pups after bloom.
